Hire those older workers

Hire those older workers

With the conclusion of Employ the Older Worker Week, we hope that employers who are looking for experienced, loyal employees will take a look at the AARP crowd. They have much to offer.

In The Herald Bulletin story on Sunday, Ruby Ginder, 79, retrained under a program called Experience Works. Her salary is paid for by a Department of Labor grant, meaning the government is interested in getting senior citizens back to work.

Ginder said she is having a hard time finding a full-time position. Age discrimination is, of course, illegal, but we know it is practiced all the time. Employers don’t want to take a chance on employees who don’t have a lot of years to work. But this is disingenuous. What older employees have to offer can be invaluable in life experience. Hiring them, too, may become a necessity.

According to Forbes, baby boomers are set to retire in droves by the end of the decade. Since boomers make up one-third of the U.S. population, there won’t be enough younger workers to replace them. “Labor shortages in key industries will force a radical rethinking of recruitment, retention, flexible work schedules and retirement,” writes Forbes. Half of the civilian federal work force will be eligible for retirement within five years.

When the boomers came of age, in the 1970s, the work force grew by 30 percent. It fell to 12 percent in the 1990s and is expected to slow to 3 percent by 2010. Workers age 35 to 44, those moving up through management ranks, will decline by 19 percent. The number of workers age 55 to 64 will increase 52 percent.

Retirement is becoming more difficult for some seniors as the cash they hoped for never materialized. Therefore many seniors, according to Forbes, hope to balance a work and retirement program through their elderly years.

As Forbes notes, “Gray-haired workers are viewed as reliable, settled, compassionate and honest.” Companies are already seeking ways for senior workers to pass on their knowledge to younger ones.

As the work force changes, seniors will be playing an important part in the world of labor. Gone are the days that retired workers will be put out to pasture. They’re too valuable. We hope employers realize this and take advantage of the experienced workers who are still eager to contribute to the economy.

We believe

Hiring older workers can be a boon to employers who value the skills and knowledge mature workers can pass on to younger ones.
